La central de Zaporiyia, donde se encuentran seis de los 15 reactores nucleares ucranianos, fue tomada en marzo por las fuerzas rusas, poco después del inicio de la invasión. Desde entonces, tanto las fuerzas ucranianas como las rusas se acusan mutuamente de bombardear las cercanías del complejo. El operador ucraniano Energoatom advirtió el sábado de los riesgos de fugas radioactivas e incendios por los ataques. La ONU pidió el fin de toda la actividad militar en la zona circundante de la central. MÁS INFORMACIÓN noticia No La OIEA asegura que el riesgo de desastre nuclear en la planta atómica de Zaporiyia es «real» Ucrania inicialmente temía que una visita del OIEA legitimaría la ocupación rusa del sitio, pero luego apoyó la idea de la misión. Por su parte, Vladimir Putin aceptó el pasado 20 de agosto que le delegación de la OIEA visitara la central sin pasar por territorio ruso.
